Some appliances, such as freezers, refrigerators, dehumidifiers and air conditioners contain a gas called freon. This gas must be removed before the item can be recycled. It is illegal to vent freon into the atmosphere; it must be removed by a certified technician and captured for recycling. Once the freon is removed, the appliance can be easily recycled. Some companies will remove the freon and give you a sticker to place on the item so you can recycle it. Others will take the appliance and do all the steps at their own facility, thus saving you the time and expense of hauling it elsewhere. Calling around will give you the solution that best suits your needs (and your wallet).
